the EU's destroying the country's culture. Don't know how it works, but taking the EU subsidies has forced Ireland to let in a ton of immigrants, not just the "Polish plumbers," but also poor and illiterate African blacks and Romanian Gypsies.

That has engendered resentment. Here, the lefties would call it racism. Ireland was very self-contained until the EU got hold of it. They supposedly brought prosperity, but they have also been destroying the culture of the country.

I'm not even sure the EU brought the prosperity. Arguably it was because they lowered corporate tax rates. Regardless, there is a lot of tension in the country that isn't reported.

it's a reflection of what's going on here, under the rubric of free trade.
