Reagan and the various activist wings of the right came alive when the old Rockefeller wing crashed and burned in 1976, even though they didn't lose by much. Carter's inept malaise was enough to set fire to the whole new movement. What could be a reconstituted moderate Republican wing is unlikely to catch fire, since that is rarely the nature of moderate movements. So it could be a real muddle unless there is a clear rejection of the past. Many of the veteran activists will push the idea that the way to win again will be to become even stronger zealots.
