Irish Europe Min: EU Poll Not Looking Good For Yes Campaign

DUBLIN (AFP)--Early indications Friday of results from Ireland's crunch European Union referendum are "not looking good" for the 'yes' campaign, Europe Minister Dick Roche told AFP.

"From what I hear, it is not looking good," he said after the RTE state broadcaster reported the 'yes' vote's support was "in difficulty" following the referendum Thursday, which is being watched anxiously by leaders across the E.U.

Speaking from his home constituency of Wicklow just south of Dublin, he said: "It is neck-and-neck here...from what I hear, Wicklow is one of the better constituencies (for the 'yes' campaign). It seems to be closer in Wicklow than elsewhere.

But he said: "From what we hear elsewhere, it is not looking good. It is not good. But I am keeping my fingers crossed, it might come right later in the day."

He said the broad picture was that in working class urban areas and in rural areas, the 'no' vote was doing well, while the picture was better for the 'yes' vote in middle class urban areas.

Ireland is the only E.U. country holding a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, but could sink it since all 27 member countries have to ratify the agreement for it to come into force.

The Lisbon Treaty replaced the doomed E.U. constitution, which was rejected by French and Dutch voters in referendums in 2005, plunging the bloc into a crisis.
