You cant stop folks from breathing but it certainly works to all our advantages to keep the carbon footprint as small as possible/feasible and thus keep global warming as manageable as possible. For arguments sake, if three degrees means NYC will be underwater in 50 years but two degrees causes minimal problems, before we evacuate NYC it might pay to try to reduce carbon emissions.
