I don't disagree with this. However, it must be carefully measured and policy has to be consistent with what the military leadership believes is doable. It also has to take into account Iran's belligerence and other considerations in the region.

It is important to keep in mind that the Iraq war was NOT just about WMD; it was about creating an environment that can serve to quell anti-Americanism amongst Muslims. Now, an American presence does inflame that problem, but the lack of an American presence could cause the region to become even more unstable. So, there is a very thin line between success and failure, and the American people are not in a position to make that judgment (via Obama, for example).

Surge has been a success and now its time to start bowing out and not digging in.

Again, I agree -- but everyone agrees the current progress is very fragile and we don't need any sudden turbulence (like an immediate decline in our presence) to disrupt it.

As you know, I have a personal interest in the region in that my son is there, so I don't want to see our troops there one minute longer than necessary. But I don't want his service there to have been wasted.
