Bids in wireless auction top $3.6-billion

MONTREAL — More than $3.6-billion had been bid so far in an auction of spectrum licences that's expected to bring more competition and consumer choice to the domestic cellphone market.

Rogers Communications Inc. was leading the way late Friday morning with $801.5-million in bidding for 47 licences, said Industry Canada's website.

Telus Corp. had bid $736.3-million for 50 licences.

Toronto-based Globalive, looking to break into Canada's mobile phone market, had bid $736.3-million for 34 licences, edging past established player Bell Mobility Inc. for the time being.

Bell Mobility Inc. had bid $508.2-million for 45 licences as of late Friday morning, the website said.

Quebecor Inc. had bid $498.4-million for 17 licences, and Toronto businessman John Bitove's Data & Audio-Visual Enterprises Wireless Inc. had bid $228-million for nine licences.

Cable operator Shaw Communications Inc. had bid $147.6-million for 19 licences.

The players are bidding on radio spectrum that is used to carry cellphone signals.
