why, in a time of a shortage, are we still paying huge farm subsidies.

I think this explains in part Obama's appeal. Many people are frustrated by the... Eh, what the heck, let's use a cliche - by politics as usual. Over time the nation accumulated a lot of baggage - too complex tax codes, mountains of suffocating regulation, society is too legalistic, medicine too defensive... and there seems to be no way to reform all those things and many others. So, the impulse is to project personal and collective hopes on a vague smart guy like Obama - and take the gamble and hope for the best. If he becomes President, this frustration and (another cliche) alienation will be the big reasons.

Regrettably, electing an ignorant narcissistic guy with populist, collectivist inclinations will not solve any of our problems. Most likely it will be.... more of the same but worse.
