The offset to using Gore's popularity is the whole 90's polarizing thing; Gore's personality is firmly defined in public, pro and con depending on where one stands on the spectrum.

There is an argument for finding someone new and letting that person incorporate private citizen Gore into the campaign to do something groundbreaking.
