I just read McCain's entire 40-page paper submitted when he was at the War College and based on his prisoner-of-war experience.

If you accept the premise that America must perpetually be at war with its enemies, it's a powerful document.

I can understand, though not agree with, the view that the Vietnam War was necessary and that the way it turned out was mostly the result of opposition within the United States. This is McCain's view.

What I cannot accept (and what McCain does not assert) is that what went on in Vietnam was, at least in some sense, a victory for the United States. I estimate that at least 20% of the American public believes this.

McCain clearly does believe that America must persist until it achieves something that can be called a victory in Iraq. He simply cannot admit that his country can make a mistake in committing itself to a war. Perhaps this is an admirable evidence of patriotism, but it is not a sane outlook.
