Hi bearshark, >>The PC assemblers and retailers nearly all ship MSFT text, spreadsheet, and database programs with their equipment. Suppose they offer a choice of suites at no annoying extra cost? What would that do to the software industry. Let us take a giant leap and suppose that IBM, some day, will market an operating system effectively for PCs.

I think your idea deserves some discussion. Currently all these PC's are loaded with MSFT OS as well as you noted applications. I spent my life developing software and have experience in OS, Applicatons and Communications and IMO the development of software basically has not changed since day one. Oh we have object oriented programing, but in general it is very detailed work, requires disipline and takes many labor hours. Until someone comes up with new technology it is going to be hard to displace Microsoft. In fact, one of the reasons the hardware has become less expensive is they have taken functionality out of the hardware and either moved it to the OS or used Microcode in the chips. The one question I have not been able to answer is "what are all these computers going to be used for". If we had a good handle on this requirement we would know much more about the software requirements. Are people going to continue to used these machines like I do or is the next generation going to use them for a different purpose? I do not have the answer but am watching.

Joan
