Hawaii is 90%+ dependent on oil. Folks here used to squawk ay 10¢ kwh for electricity. Now it is over 50¢. The roads and yards are lined with gas guzzlers for sale. The economy is grinding to a halt without cheap oil to lube it. Car pooling, moped sales and bus ridership are rising dramatically. Gas here is about $4.50.

Electric bikes sales are booming in Japan and Europe.

I think they will do the same when we hit $9 gas in the US.

A moped that will go 40mph and has a range of 50-100 miles costs 50¢ to recharge today in Hawaii. On the mainland the recharge cost is maybe 10¢. Retail price $1,300.
