Man-made solar apparatus is much more efficient than corn plants at capturing the energy from sunlight. Solar panels typically get from 8% to over 19% efficiency, with the "over 19%" performance crown held by SunPower. Solar thermal can get up to 30% using a Sterling engine. Corn plants get less than 2%.

Given the same amount of land, imagine 1 month with a quality solar panel is better than 1 year with a corn field!

A battery and a premium electric motor will get over 90% efficiency. A gasoline or ethanol internal combustion engine is less than 1/2 that amount in efficiency, and even worse if you count the wasted power during idling. Batteries, however, are very expensive.
