Got a question. What if every issued share had an independent serial number for tracking purposes?

What that not eliminate any actual failure to deliver?

Now.. obviously the brokers would have to set up a system where they electronically track share serial numbers entering and leaving their accounts. And, of course, those serial numbers would not be consecutive, but I'm sure that if I buy 1,000 shares of something, there has to be a way of archiving the serial numbers attached to each of those shares in a non-intrusive manner. And if a physical stock certificate is issued, a broker could arrange with other dealers to "silently" swap consecutive numbers in a non-market transaction in order to reassign serial numbers electronically so my stock certificate would contain 1000 consecutive serial numbers.

I wonder what the barriers would be to such a system? Don't dollar bills have unique serial numbers? Are they not tracked electronically when optically scanned? Why not do the same for stock certificates in order to prevent counterfeiting via FTDs?
