What do you mean by "reasonable resolution via the justice system"? That could be getting a just and proper punishment, or it could be something very different. As for reconciling with society? Well there are serious criminals including murderers, who have gone on to later make a positive contribution to society. Its not very common, and I can't think of the names of any specific individuals at the moment, but I remember reading stories about a few. My point wasn't about positive contributions to society, but the simple point that many criminals don't want publicity. Those that want a bunch of publicity tend to be the foolish and insane. The intelligent and sane but evil person is likely to want his crimes and evils hidden from the world.
