"What do you mean by "reasonable resolution via the justice system"? That could be getting a just and proper punishment, or it could be something very different.

The justice system should be resolute ... the issue should be resolved.

The justice system should be reasonable ... we should have fair outcomes which are based on sound logic.

The justice system can be something different than punishing. Personally I think we sell ourselves short by an over emphasis on punishment when often times a reasonable resolution can be reached that isn't punitive. I, for example, do not view death as punitive. Rehabilitation should actually be rewarding IMO.

When I was young I met a couple of Kalamath Indians who said they would rob liquor stores starting around September first of each year. When they didn't get caught they would throw a big party for their buddies. When they got caught, they would get six months of room and board at the county facility. They couldn't think of a better way to get winter lodging. Many people who are in prison have made choices in which they viewed incarceration as a reasonable risk to take, and an acceptable outcome, even a preferable end to episodes of wild or devient conduct. There are meth dealers who think the risk of being forced to wear an ankle bracelet is well worth it. Personally, I don't see that as resolute in most cases, since recidivism is very high.
