MTBE: a quick Google search came up with the fact that MTBE has been around for over 100 years (yes, it dissolves gallstones) in organic chemistry labs as a solvent... no clear indication of anyone really "inventing" it as it is manufactured via the chemical reaction of methanol and isobutylene... However, most sources kicked up give credit/blame to ARCO for being the first to add it to gasoline.

Not that it matters at this point.

Personally, I've had nothing but problems ever since oxygenates were mandated... every year when we switched to oxygenated gasoline, I saw my engines run hotter and a slight drop in mileage per gallon... I can't prove it, but I believe two pre-1984 cars I once had, and had no problems with for several years at the time, both blew head gaskets within a few tanks of the switchover to oxygenated gasoline... I suppose that more modern engines are engineered to get around the higher running temps (but not the mileage drop off)... from my perspective they are all bad, whether MTBE or ethanol or whatever...
