he described quite vividly how the mayans who live in the jungle are in exquisite harmony with Nature,

In Jared Diamond's Collapse, the Mayans are one of the civilizations he discusses in terms of failure. They suffered from increased population, deforestation and erosion on their hillsides, fighting (over resources) and the usual short-sidedness of the rulers, who were into enriching themselves and building monuments, and eventually they could no longer sustain. (hmm, all sounds vaguely familiar)

We had a wonderful guide while visiting Chichen Itza and came away with enormous respect for their achievements. What a shame almost all their writings were destroyed by the Spanish.
