Switch battle for backbones: ASND's GX550 vs CSCO's GSR 12000 At N+I in Atlanta las week, ASND and CSCO announced plans to release switches that support OC-48 (2.4Gbps) backbone speeds needed by MCI and ISPs. The CSCO's GSR 12000 have an internal switching capacity as high as 60Gbps. Initially, they support OC-3 (155Mbps) and OC-12 (622Mbps), with OC-48 support due by 2nd qtr of 98 and OC-192 (9.6Gbps) support slated for an undetermined date. ASND's GX 550 core switch can scale to 100Gbps internal speeds (switching fabric speed), with network switching initially availabe at OC-3 and OC-12. OC-48 support is expected early next year.
