Lichtman believed that Continental was operating a “pump and dump” business. In this scheme, sellers/stock promoters artificially inflate, or “pump up,” the price of a stock through false and misleading positive statements to induce unsuspecting buyers to buy shares. The sellers sell then “dump” these overvalued shares, the price falls, and innocent investors lose their money.
