You have only the too-simple explanation.

Research shows that people in less dense communities are happier. This is becasue they tend to have more opportunities (it's easier to become Mayor of Podunk than of Boston or something). People are happy to be medium fish in a small pond.

The next part is where you really get the stuff backwards. The correlation is that happy and sucessful people are less likely to want their circumstances change. That means they are more conservative. The cause and effect is the reverse of what you propose.

So the real way to make people happy is to reign in population growth.
