Yes, Obama got plenty of donations from the financial industry from the start even though Clinton is the NY senator. The arguments I saw to explain this was that he was more manipulable as Clinton would just come back in with all those that backed Bill Clinton. OTOH we now see Obama is getting the same team behind him - Robert Rubin et al.
