I don't find that odd at all. People who are prone to ideology usually are susceptible in the first place because of a deficit of intellect. People with the ability to think clearly and critically have no need for ideology, because they can reason through complex issues without having to lean on dogma. Intellectual midgets typically would rather follow the inflexible rules of others rather than lead the way on resolving the messy realities of life's problems. Most of the time, those solutions require subtlety and a nuanced response. There usually are no silver bullet cures. Unfortunately, the politics of silver bullets does well in this country. As we saw with the white uneducated voters voting for Hillary, despite her blatant pandering and lies, it is clear that this country is full of intellectual midgets. That is how someone like Bush could get elected twice despite all his incompetence. Our leaders are a direct reflection of our country's culture and values.

koan: great post. I am lucky in a way because the first 20 years of my life I was pretty much uneducated. So I remember how I saw the world. I had no realistic mental image of the world. No "knowledge directed perception". Almost no primary education. And certainly had no understanding of the difference between Kennedy and nixon. My mind was a blank slate.

After I stumbled into college, 4 years later I was a Sartre/Camus existentialist. That is one long journey-lol!!
