Well, again.. the REAL problem with Ethanol is logistical.

We either have to go "all-in" and replace gasoline with alcohol, or build a completely redundant national pipeline system to transport it. You see, ethanol can't be transported via the same pipelines as gasoline and diesel because it tends to collect water on the way, rendering it less usable (except in a cocktail.. ;0).

Petroleum products also become contaminated with water, but can be readily removed using filter-separators. But I understand that removing water from ethanol is costly and time-consuming.

I think there are some other options that need to be explored. But before I would advocate moving further forward with ethanol, I think we'd be better off moving to hydrogen as an alternative (and not only for fuel cells). It can be burned in an engine, can be stored and transported very safely at high pressures (QTWW has a Hydrogen tank that can be pumped up to 10K/PSI and is bulletproof.. literally).

I'm getting very interested in algae derived biofuels and the promise that it may hold. It certainly doesn't compete with human or animal foodstocks.
