Your 14 billion number seems quite low.

That's what I've read... sorry no link. But estimating reserves of un-drilled oil fields is an art not a science... and the tendency is to over-estimate.

Trucks, planes and trains which use half the oil will continue no matter the car issue - there are no hybrid electric airplanes now or on the drawing board.

I've read where there actually is an "electric airplane" in the works... but that is certainly decades away if ever. But certainly alternate fuels can be used for trucks, planes and trains... and nobody (should be) saying we need to get 100% off oil. We just need to dramatically increase our efficiency.

They sure think they can make a profit - they keep asking for permission.

They keep asking for permission but do very little new drilling. There are 1000's of approved leases that are not being used.
