John;

Interesting discussion on the Friedman piece.

I was extremely impressed with Obama's questioning of Petraeus at the fall hearings. Those were the right questions; all directed toward what level of troop strength, resource allocation, etc. would provide an acceptable probability of a minimally acceptable outcome

I think Obama has a far better sense of what is happening in Iraq than Friedman does. The Friedman piece is a continuation of his pollyanna Iraq thinking. .......What is victory in Iraq? Is it a "minimally acceptable outcome"? What do you see as a minimally acceptable outcome? To understand what has happened to the country since we invaded, don't you have to think of what conditions are within the country? If only 2 out of 5 children are getting safe drinking water and if the number of kids in school has fallen to 50% and considering there are several million of displaced people, how far has the "minimally acceptable outcome" fallen. There is now a whole generation of chidren who know nothing other than a smashed country and many hear nothing but harsh words about the US. We think of victory in our terms - fewer of our soldiers killed - but what is victory for the Iraq people? I don't think Friedman has a sense of that.
