I don't buy the argument that opening up florida offshore will change gasoline prices anytime soon, and I doubt many here are that naive, but I still think it's a good idea.

Even as a donor to the Sierra Club, Audobon Society, etc, I don't think there are compelling arguments as to why Florida offshore should be of limits. It was primarily political, not environmental concerns that led Jeb and GW to continue the moratorium on drilling there.

The majority of hydrocarbons from Florida would be natural gas, which Florida uses an immense amount of. Importing NG from some far away theocracy whose other export is Al Qaeda makes less sense than finding it in our own waters. You can make a compelling argument that the environmental costs of not drilling off of the coast of Florida are greater than doing so.

California is another matter altogether. There is a collective memory there of some bad spills and I don't think there is any chance the state will let more drilling happen.

The larger picture is that any increase in drilling access should be accompanied by conservation efforts. These include mass transit, support for hybrid vehicles, etc.
