>>SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Shares of Applied Materials Inc., KLA-Tencor Corp., Novellus Systems Inc., and other semiconductor equipment makers tumbled on news of a decline in orders and shipments last month<<

Whoever wrote this story needs to brush up a little on math.

This is from an earlier post:

Three-month average shipments rose 46% in September to $1.6 billion from a year ago. The shipments were 6% above August 1997 levels.

Three-month average bookings rose to $1.75 billion, a 125% increase from a year ago. Bookings were up 4% from August 1997.

The trade association said orders have climbed about 5% a month for the last eight months.
