"There are different stripes of creationists. "

Yes, and those stripes are diverse, so why pigeon hole the majority of them with a comment aimed at a few close minded extremists?

"What about the people who say that the Earth is six thousand years old?"

They are probably not very well educated. The vast majority of believers in an educated Western society would not support such a statement. Coyne's comment was not pointed at villagers in a Southern Egyptian desert.

"Or the many people who believe promote the idea of Intelligent Design, who come up with specific things that they say are not possible within the framework of evolution as we know it today?"

Evolution as we know it today is likely to change according to what we will learn tomorrow. I expect scientists to adjust their views and ID people to adjust theirs according to what is learned. I expect some of the ID people will patriotically support old arguments even when new information surfaces but most will 'adapt' their views as data comes available.

"This is a specific example of one of those things such people have said were not possible. Thus, while Coyne's statement may have been overly broad, I think it's reasonable.

It is reasonable to apply it to close minded religious extremists who refuse to look at the evidence but it is a bigoted statement when applied to people who believe the universe is a creation.
