Tenchu,
Got an example or some first-hand observations to share?
Just the weekend I was there (Memorial Day weekend), they needed something to be done, that a contractor with 2 guys could complete in 2 to 3 hours took 5 UAW guys 3 days (Saturday, Sunday, Monday) 3 full days at double time pay. That's approx $60 per hour x 8 hours x 3 days x 5 people = $7,200. So something that could have cost $1,000 net took $7,200 + overhead.
You can make it up in one Escalade, but you probably have to sell 20 small cars to make up one weekend of UAW f. ups in one small area of the plant.
Here is another: some years ago, out of desperation, one of the big 3 hired my friend as a consultant to deal with some unruly UAW workers. These were outright saboteurs. The company tried to get rid of them - and in some cases succeeded, but UAW fought it, forced the company to bring them back.
So you have outright saboteurs working at your company, being paid top dollar. My friend was supposed to make sure that they not only don't do anything bad, but to get some productive work out of them....
The primary adversary of the US automakers are in many cases their own employees - before they get to fight their competitors...
