Generally the "big bang" is looked at as starting the start of the universe, that time begins with the big bang. Although its not like there is a very good understanding of the big bang itself, much less before the big bang, its possible that the universe existed as the pre-bang bing singularity for some period of time before the bang, its also possible that past universes (or past incarnations of our universe) had existed and than collapsed in to a singularity, and you have a bang-expand-contract-singularity-bang-expand-contract-singularity cycle, that has happened more than once (or I suppose that goes back forever).

Speculations about before the big bang are based on very little. They are untested, and currently (and perhaps forever) untestable hypotheses not solid theories, or to put it simply they are guesses, and not even really "educated guesses".
