Galveston beaches don't look good. Even the sand when clean isn't nice and white, just gray. Of course, most of it is dredged up and put on the beach. Go down south, TX beaches are nice there though. Padre Island is better than east coast FL beaches imo - where by the way, trash from Cuba washes in - I've picked up trash with writing on it from Cuba on the FL coast myself. Have never seen west coast FL beaches - I'll assume they're pretty as the current doesn't flow north from Cuba on that side.

As far as tar and stuff that washes in on Galveston, I think thats a function of the major port facilities in the Houston area. Ships dump stuff before coming in.
