Billions of these embedded systems exist throughout the world, and
there's no chance all of them can be found and tested in time.
But for Basin Electric, Anderson has established a procedure for each business unit to follow:

1. Take an inventory of equipment in your area that most likely has
an embedded microprocessor in it.

2. Identify which of the equipment is critical to doing business:
Would its failure put Basin Electric in jeopardy?

3. Finally, put a priority on each of the business-critical systems and start testing and fixing them as soon as possible.

Three levels of "business critical" are:

- Is the system required to comply with all regulatory and legal requirements issued by, for example, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration?

- Is the system needed to ensure the safety of Basin Electric's customers, employees and facilities? This would include, for example, fire alarms, aircraft guidance systems and electrical protective relaying systems.

- Is the system needed to provide energy products to Basin Electric member cooperatives and customers? This would include electricity, natural gas and byproducts as well as the acquiring of raw materials such as coal, lime and oil.

.........

These embedded microprocessors are everywhere in our home and work environments. Besides the few mentioned above, here are just a few places where they're used:

Vehicles
Aircraft and air traffic control systems
Fire control systems
Air and water quality monitoring systems
Satellites
Automated mail systems
Safes and vaults
Credit card systems
Telephones and fax machines
Bar code scanners
Heart defibrillators
