Is everything spinning out of control? Midwestern levees are bursting. Polar bears are adrift. Gas prices are skyrocketing. Home values are abysmal. Air fares, college tuition and health care border on unaffordable. Wars without end rage in Iraq, Afghanistan and against terrorism.

You hate to say anything about what's happening......first because you feel like chicken little, and secondly, because it feels like its really true......and that's the very scary part. Yesterday was the first day this month that Seattle's temps were not below normal for this time of the year. Every time I go to the gas station I tack on an additional $5. I can't imagine how people with long commutes are feeling. Things in the Midwest are so fukked up and now we're hearing that few of the levees along the Mississippi meet federal standards. What the hell? Maybe we are third world. It definitely feels like everything is out of whack and we are spinning out of control.

It hardly matters to those in the path. Just ask the people of New Orleans who survived Hurricane Katrina. They are living in a city where, 1,000 days after the storm, entire neighborhoods remain abandoned, a national embarrassment that evokes disbelief from visitors.

NO will be Bush's legacy. There are so many things I hate about his administration but its NO that puts that hate over the top. It epitomizes their attitude about this country. The best part about it though is the way private citizens have stepped in....from Henry Connick Jr to Pitt and Jolie to J. Carter and Habitat for Humanity to Oprah Winfrey to people like myself who give NO gift packages to relatives. Its taking forever but the city is starting to make a comeback.
