I don't know what specifically might do it, but they have a history of innovation -- the SPARC, Java, Solaris (of course, these stood on the shoulders of others, but so does most modern innovation). They've got bright people and plenty of resources, so I wouldn't write them off completely, especially at low enough stock-market valuations. What they need is some leadership and a bit of luck.
