There was a time when we needed to be there. I'm not sure we do at this point.

But it is one of the things the Left typically misunderstands -- the "signals" sent by apparently small moves (like Obama saying he would meet with Ahmedenijad with no preconditions) are greatly magnified when you're dealing with foreign governments.

The withdrawal of our presence in SK would likely telegraph something much more substantial to NK, and that's probably why it is not being done. Even a simple trial balloon about drawing down in SK can send shockwaves through the system.

This is why you can't have a loose cannon like Obama shooting off his mouth. The entire world relies on having stability in the Oval Office, and while he may be popular amongst terrorists, foreign governments do not need to see this kind of weakness on the doorstep of the WH.
