Mike,

I never predicted that Cyrix and AMD would lose money all year. In fact I said that they would have one or two profitable quarters due to filling the pipeline with new products, but would be losing money again before the end of the year. This cycle has repeated more than once for both Cyrix and AMD.

Keep in mind that just because Cyrix grew unit shipments does not necessarily mean they picked up any market share. In fact, they could have lost share and still grown shipments since the overall market is growing.

BTW, after today, TLC has eclipsed INTC as my largest holding.

Re: R&D

If Intel would have cut back R&D they would have also easily made estimates. You can't look at things that way. R&D is a cost of doing business.

Re: Cyrix/NSM

Only time will tell if NSM can successfully integrate and take advantage of Cyrix's products. I have long maintained that Cyrix's and AMD's main problems are not product related but marketing/strategy related. Neither company has competent management. Personally, I never thought of NSM as a marketing type company so I still see a major exposure. Hopefully, NSM's management will be smarter strategically than AMD's and Cyrix's managment and will not try to take Intel head on. But like I said, time will tell.
