GREENVILLE — The new police vehicles which will be taking to the streets of Greenville later this year are expected to be equipped with video cameras.
The City Council is scheduled Tuesday to authorize the purchase of six in-car video camera systems for the units, which is being recommended by Police Chief Harold Roseberry.
In a memo to the Council, Roseberry explained the Greenville Police Department has been using the cameras on all the current vehicles and said the new cameras will be installed on the units the Council approved back in March.
The Council approved the purchase of six Dodge Chargers to replace the same number of aging Ford Crown Victorias in the municipal fleet. The new vehicles, when purchased and put into use, are not only different in age and body style, will look cosmetically different than the current vehicles, as the police department is switching back to a black-and-white color scheme.
Current patrol vehicles for the department feature a blue, green and white color scheme which has been use since the late 1980s, after the department switched from the previous black-and-white cars in use since the 1950s.
The Council is scheduled to consider the purchase of six DVM500 Digital Video Mirror Kits from Digital-Ally, at a cost of $25,936.80.
Funds for the cameras are in the department’s current budget, with a portion also coming from a state seizure account.
Training in the use of the cameras will be provided by the police department staff.
It is not necessary to go out for bids on the cameras, Roseberry noted, as they are being purchased through a contract with the Houston Galveston Area Council of Governments.
The Council is scheduled to vote on the purchase during the consent calendar portion of Tuesday’s regular agenda, starting at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street. A work session is also scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday. |
