Yes, those are woodpecker holes. The location is a place called Burnt Cedar Bar, so as you can imagine there was a fire there many years ago. That tree survived, but it was damaged, insects invaded, and woodpeckers pecked those holes.

The man standing in the picture had a trap cabin there and we were looking for remnants of it. We did not find any, but we did find stumps from trees that he cut for it. That was back in the 1930s.
