Thanks for your response. You make some good points.

While we worry about nice national parks or pristine beaches, the rest of the world wants what we have.

We should worry about it, since we are the ones who have control over our backyard. Decision to keep it clean v/s drilling should be thought through before we lease out for drilling purposes. Why would any other country worry about it?

I never see anyone question why it's ok to drill somewhere else like Saudi Arabia, Nigeria or the Amazon (Peru and Ecuador)? Those people want clean water and air along with a healthy environment (at least they do in the Amazon and the Nigerians they just want to eat).

I am sure there are organizations who question drilling in environmentally sensitive locations but the countries you mention have either repressive regimes to have meaningful foothold by local people wishing to debate the pro and cons of which areas to drill and if the trade off is worth it.

How can we continue to trash the rest of the planet while wanting to keep the US pristine? Nationalized NIMBYism???

Good point. Why don't we export our values about our care for the planet. BTW: trashing of rest of the planet so far has been "mainly" done for our (developed world's) benefit. Regardless the local population is the one who has a greater control of their own destiny rather than environmentalists sitting in US.

So why demand the others drill for energy while threatening to sue them while they take the environmental hits all for IOU's of USD's???

Don't know which specific example you are talking about. But this dichotomy should not exist.

So many need to get out of North America and see how the other 5.8 billion live.

IMO we can have both and do it responsibly.

Yep

Don't miss understand, we're way past the time additionally drilling is going to get us out this mess. Only massive conservation and radical change about how we think about energy will make any difference.

Totally agree. Though this should have started meaningfully a couple of decades ago.
