".. the effect of an unpopular president during a prolonged and increasingly unpopular war. That factor brings to mind the elections in 1952 and 1968. In both instances an unpopular sitting president (Truman, Johnson) presiding over an unpopular war (Korea, Vietnam) chose not to run again. (Bush of course is termed out.) In each instance the opposition party prevailed in the presidential election, satisfying the electorate’s (understandable) desire for a change in direction. Seems likely we will get that result this year as well. Bush and Iraq are drags on McCain that he probably cannot overcome."
