And the answer is..... YES. They've done it before. It's not hard to do. You go BK, and rename your airline (e.g., United Emerites Airlines). Planes won't go away but the original company will.

They just go BK and reorganize. All shareholder equity is wiped out and union contracts are rewritten. They don't all do this at the same time though. But once one of them does it, they have a competitive advantage over the others (e.g., better union contracts, no debt) which compels the rest to follow suit.
