Folks will turn down their thermostats, but not enough to offset the higher fuel bills.

Right now the trend here is to super-insulate homes. I plan to add 4 inches of foam insulation to the outside of mine, and replace the windows. And I'll also be reducing the total area of the windows, except on the south side.

FYI, igloos were traditionally used in Canada (not Alaska). They were made with blocks of snow, which is a much better insulator than ice, and heated by body warmth and whale/seal oil lamps to slightly above the freezing point.
