OPEC is going much like the days of the Texas Railroad Commission - it's all over

Alexei Miller of Gazprom says, "OPEC has lost control over petroleum prices"

OPEC has no control over oil price: Gazprom chief
Thu Jun 26, 8:40 PM ET

The head of Russian energy giant Gazprom said in an interview published Friday that OPEC has virtually no influence over global oil prices.

In an interview with the Financial Times conducted over e-mail, Alexei Miller also made clear his aim to make Gazprom the "most influential" company in the energy sector.

"Not a single decision has been passed of late that would really influence the global oil market," Miller said, referring to the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

He predicted a "great surge in oil and gas prices ... which will end with prices at a radically new level", effectively reiterating comments he made earlier this month, when he predicted that the price of oil would likely hit 250 dollars a barrel, from its current level of around 140 dollars.

On his company's ambitions, he told the business daily: "In the coming years, Gazprom will be not just a major company in the world, but the most influential in the energy business."

Miller said Gazprom was increasingly viewing the domestic energy market in Russia as attractive, but noted that North America was "a region of our strategic interests".
