Bill,

Intel only has to worry about one chip, the micro, running at, like 200 - 300 MHz. Our machines have more chips running at full speed, so the paths the signals have to travel are much longer. However, since we are using CMOS now instead of ECL, there are far less chips because of much denser integration. More parallelism is part of it, along with much better RAS (reliability, availability, serviceability), I/O bandwidth, security and legacy operating systems (MVS) that run only on our/IBM type machines help us still sell larger machines.
