The Connecticut River was basically in the same condition as the Potomac. It was badly polluted in the 60s from mills in NH. They cleaned the river up by shutting down or treating refuse from the mills. Once the river actually had salmon, they were reintroduced sometime in the late 70s. Not sure how the fishing is now..... but the river was clean enough to support salmon again.
