dybdahl,
If you're saying the energy costs of creating the new, destroying the old, overshadow the energy savings from the new, you very well could be right. However, if the computer is obsolete and not meeting your needs, or you've made a decision to replace the car, then going to a more energy saving unit makes sense to me.
Both your old computer and car might be used by someone else, rather then being destroyed, but eventually obsolete equipment should be.
Frankly, I've seen some data that says when you consider Hybrids, the higher energy costs of manufacturing them as well as ultimately recycling them offsets all the energy you save while using them. I suspect that plug in hybrids will be much better, but with todays technology the ultimate should be the diesel plug in hybrid. I know VW has a diesel hybrid coming sometime this year that gives 75 mpg, make it a plug in and you really have something.
