Krugman makes the point that much of Congress is trying to blame speculation for the rise in oil prices. At least part of their reasoning is that eventually the speculation will end and the price of oil will come back down........thereby ending the crisis. It seems they really don't want to have to go through the effort of coming up with an alternative energy directive.

When reading that, it struck me that its just not the American president and VP who are the lesser of us......but many members in Congress. Was this an intentional move on the part of the electorate......picking stupid people to be in elected office hoping they won't cause too much damage, or did the seemingly 'cushiness' of a Congressional job attract the attractive, amenable losers in our culture? Whichever theory is true, we better do a better job going forward picking our leaders, or we may be in even deeper do do than we are now.
