Sam, I know your interested in Fiber Bragg Gratings for use in WDM and now I see you are posting on the Coherent thread again so I thought you might find this interesting.

The always informative Tim Bagwell posted this link on the CYMI thread.

qpstech.ca

The company is called QPS Technology, Inc. They are a private company located near Montreal and they manufacture Phase Masks for inscribing Fiber Bragg Gratings.

"Mikroelectronik Centret has developed a whole process for achieving strong Bragg gratings meeting the specifications for WDM components.
Glass waveguides with high photosensitivity are produced by plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition. The glass photosensitivity is further enhanced by placing the waveguides in a deuterium chamber at high pressure for several days. Bragg gratings are then induced by illuminating the waveguides with UV light through a QPS Technology Inc. phase mask. The exposures are performed at 248 nm using a KrF excimer laser."

This sounds like something COHR could be involved in. I know Tim mentioned it to the CYMI thread because CYMI makes 248 nm excimer lasers for photolithography.
Since COHR is trying to make inroads in that market with their excimer lasers I thought that this could become another market opportunity for them as well.

I haven't figured out why COHR, with their knowledge of optical thin films, etalon filters, and lasers haven't SOMEHOW capitalized on the explosion of WDM. I am disappointed with them right now.
