Dybdahl,
I've not heard of the Lupo, as I understand it many of the cars made for Europe are smaller, lighter, and more efficient are not exported here to the U.S.
Here in California, some diesels that are imported can't be legally sold because they don't meet our pollution requirements which are higher than most states. If the cars are as efficient as you're saying, I'd think they'd also be pretty clean, hopefully more can come into our markets soon.
Diesel here's selling for more than gas, I have a diesel on my boat for both safety and economy, I don't think most sailboat companies even have gas power options. Last time I bought it was over $5 a gallon, not high by European Standards, but about double what it was last year. At roughly 10 mpg under power this doesn't overly concern me, but friends with big power boats who use gallons per mile it's becoming a real burn. As I understand it they get more diesel from a barrel of oil and it requires less refining, so clearly there's some manipulation in this market, but I think that's why all our costs are so high anyway.
