<Have you surfed cable lately? How is providing 500 channels of worthless programming any better than my present 50 channels of nothing.>
As a keyboard potato, I don't keep up with couch potato faire. But the CABLES do, and seem to feel the couches want more, and will pay for it.
<I disagree, BA is going to compete with HFC systems.>
We'll see how they do. What are Comcast's cable modem service and rates like? And what will BA offer in the same territory?
<Now if you think plugging a line card into a DSLAM and providing a RADSL modem to the customer is time consuming, I disagree. RADSL will adjust to the line quality and give the user the max. speed. ADSL modems will become plug-and-play.>
I completely disagree. This technology has been trialed under the supervision trained ADSL engineers. Installing and maintaining/trouble-shooting banks of DSLAMs with ADSL modems, which includes dealing with power management, crosstalk, heat, and the inevitable modem-outs, is FAR from a plug and play proposition, especially when you are talking widespread deployment over uncertain and highly variable line conditions.
<What does it cost the cable companies to provide a HFC system and cable modem. I contend it costs less for the RBOC's to deploy ADSL.>
As mentioned, HFC is largely being supported through market researched anticipated premium channel revenues (at least for COX, and I would imagine this is fairly universal). This means the direct cost per user for cable modem would be far less.
<It's going to be integrated into the 5ESS platform. Many of problem you stated are solved with this platform.>
Ahh yes, the days of Phrack! and the 5ESS.
Well, if a CO doesn't already run a 5ESS, I guess they can always get rid of whatever they have (old ATT analog ESSs, earlier ATT dig versions, NTIs, ERICYs, etc.) and buy one, and then buy the B-AIU interface. But this may tweak the numbers just a little, don't you think?
And though it's advertised as such, has it been ADSL field tested?
<If you run ADSL from the CO to the customer prem. crosstalk isn't a problem.>
This is not what I understand. Echo cancelling helps a lot, but xtalk is a fact of telco life sending signals over frequency ranges with bundled-copper.
